City authorities and the prefectural government are in charge of cleaning up the caesium-137 released by the accident that has raised ambient doses by 5-10 mSv/y for the city's 290,000 inhabitants. Decontaminating children's facilities such as schools was the top priority and all 202 of these were tackled by August last year.
Now the focus is on people's homes, with the goal of reducing additional dose to 1 mSv per year. So far, about 4000 homes have been cleaned. The clean-up team deals with about ten homes per day, but all 110,000 homes in the city are to be cleaned so the work rate must improve in order to finish on schedule in the next five years.

Only 29 YEARS to go!
WNN is very much a NPP ‘company rag’. So we will skip over the ‘hand-waving’ and take a look at their numbers.
92 Weeks have elapsed since 03/11. ‘About’ 4,000 of 110,000 homes in the capitol city, Seat of Government, for Fukushima Prefecture, have been ‘decontaminated’. That would work out to about 43 homes per week. WNN says ther current rate is 10 homes per day. There are 106,000 homes left to go. At the present rate, this will require 10,600 days weeks or approximately 29 YEARS to complete this home clean-up effort.
We can probably safely presume that the homes of high government officials and the ‘well to do’ accounted for the 4,000 homes completed to date. The present half-hearted effort will not be completed until the C-134 has half-lifed to insignificance.
A laughable and/or contemptable effort;
IMHO
Oh PULEEEZZ...
The half-life of the radioisotopes doesn't tell you the length of time for cleanup.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were contaminated with Cesium-137 and Strontium-90 due to the bombings of August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945.
We didn't have to wait 29 years to 30 years for these two cities to be cleaned up; even though the half-lives of Sr-90 and Cs-137 are 29 years and 30 years, respectively.
Waiting
The 'hold-up' is due to a low 'give-a-chit' level on the part of TEPCO and/or Japan Inc, IMHO.
In addition, TEPCO is upside down & underwater. So TEPCO cannot beg, borrow or steal any more money to do anything. Perhaps, EVENTUALLY the Japanese national government will recognize that THEY bought this mess, with LAX regulation and oversight. Chalk the ~ $5T loss up to experience. Clean up the mess and then proceed as a wiser (and poorer) nation.
The DANGER level is self-evident, to ALL, but the NPP cheerleader crowd.
The LOLLYGAGGING is by design.
The USA National Government should also learn from the experience, but so far, THEY have not. Those theiving, insurrectionist, unconstitutional liars, are not MY government.
