For Bandstra

Thank u responding to my new milk testing comment... I was disappointed to see Cesium is still being detected.... Are u guys surprised that after a yr isotopes are still present??... I do understand that u feel the amounts are so minute they pose no health risk.... But as a mom it is very difficult to let your child consume anything that has a potential causing harm.... Even if it involves the smallest risk... Thanks again for ur time!!!!!

Detector Calibration

I have a handheld ionization detector for alpha, beta and gamma.
Where can I get it calibrated in the Berkeley area?

There are places online where

There are places online where you can get it calibrated.

I have a geiger counter....it has been very boring looking for Fukushima radiation with it. I haven't seen a damned thing and I have tried. If you have a pancake style GM you may see something, but I doubt it, and even if you do one would be hard put to say where it came from without spectrometry.

Don't get me wrong, the GM would be good to look for mass contamination, I just don't see that in any media here stateside.

Mother Nature is the biggest source of radiation exposure

Mother Nature is the biggest source of radiation exposure to your child.
You may not like that; but it is true and there's nothing you can do.

Unlike I-131 with its 8 day half-life so that it decays away in a few months; cesium and strontium have longer half lives so it is no surprise to anyone that they are still being detected, because it takes longer for them to decay.

However, if you think that the milk and food you give your child doesn't have radioactive material exclusive of Fukushima; you are kidding yourself.

As Mark Bandstra has cited many times here; even rainwater that you let your child go out and play in, or drink when our municipal water agencies collect that rainwater and send it to our kitchen taps; have radioactivity in them.

The radioactivity due to Fukushima is analogous to someone spraying a bunch of germs into the air. You may say that you don't want your child exposed to germs, but your child is being exposed to germs anyway, even without the person spraying germs around.

Likewise, with radioactivity. Your child is exposed to Carbon-14, Tritium, Potassium-40, Radon....and a whole host of radioactive elements that mankind has always been exposed to, but just didn't know it.

The radioactivity from Fukushima is just a marginal increase to this barrage of radioactivity that your child is already exposed to, that you can't do a thing about.
