Thousands of liters of radioactive water have been released into Lake Ontario as a result of an accident at a Canadian nuclear power plant, according to authorities.
“The event was a low level regulatory event with only negligible effect to the environment and no public health implications,” Ontario Power said in a statement on Wednesday.

Our “authorities” say there is only a negligible effect to the environment and no public health implications. No need to worry people. 20,000 gallons of radioactive water leaking into the already severely polluted lake Ontario is nothing to worry about.

Think of a container or pool that is 10 feet by 10 feet by 27 feet, filled with radioactive water. Now imagine dumping that into your city (and many other cities) water supply. Would that concern you?

The “authorities” also state that there will be no impact to public drinking water. My advice would be do not touch tap water if you live in a city close to lake Ontario! This really shows the level of complacency in our public health departments. 20,000 gallons of radioactive water entering the public water supply, Do not sweat it! It is harmless.

It depends.

Maybe ... maybe not.

You need to tell me how many Bq/l of what was in the water.

The volume of Lake Ontario is 4.3e14 gallons versus 1.9e4 gallons that were discharged. So the original concentrations will be diluted by a factor of 2e10 or 20 billion to one.

meh.

Exactly correct.

Exactly correct. You have to know how much radioactivity was in the "pool" water in addition to its volume. The problem was ill-posed since it was under-specified.

Additionally, Lake Ontario is a lot bigger than the pool; and water is naturally radioactive anyway. There's a little bit of naturally made radioactive Tritium in the water of Lake Ontario. Additionally, there are dissolved minerals in the water that have radioactive species.

Perhaps an analogy with help our pea-brained anti-nukes with their limited reasoning abilities to comprehend this. Suppose we talk about bacteria instead of radioactivity.

We have a pool of water that contains bacteria; say E. coli. Someone wants to dump that into Lake Ontario. Is there anything to worry about.

We need to know how much bacteria was in the water. Additionally, the water in Lake Ontario is not sterile, and never was. Mother Nature put E. coli in Lake Ontario water. What do you think the waste from the end of the alimentary canals of all the fish goes?

Suppose we started with our pool full of natural Lake Ontario water. Then we let some children play in the pool on a hot day. Their skin bacteria will add to the pool bacteria load. Would anyone have trouble with dumping that pool of water back into Lake Ontario?

If you do, would you have trouble with the kids going to the beach and playing in Lake Ontario directly? It achieves the same result as the pool.

That's the problem with our idiot anti-nukes; they have 1-bit computers for "brains". They can't handle quantitative problems. The 1-bit can code only for "good" or "bad" So in their pitiful world, everything is 100% good, or 100% bad and no shades of gray.

To them any bacteria is bad. To them any radioactivity is bad. The problem is that we never did live in a world that was bacteria free and radioactivity free.

We just didn't know about bacteria and radioactivity before science demonstrated their existence. Of course, the scientifically illiterate anti-nukes want to "return" to a world that never did exist.

Poor little fools.
