Nuclear Reactor Development: a Very Personal Perspective

Based on personal experience, the talk will summarize some of the author’s lessons learned during a 40-year career spent in nuclear reactor research and technology development.
A short historical overview will summarize the main stages of nuclear reactor development, highlighting the driving forces behind key technology choices.
After introducing an industrial realization of the fast reactor technology (the French reactor Superphénix) and using as example the author’s own experience in dealing with a specific problem (under-prediction of the absorber rod worth) related to this reactor, the talk will conclude on some “take-home points”.
About Dr. Stanculescu:
Mr A. Stanculescu holds a DrSc in Reactor Physics from the University of Rome.
He is presently the Director of INL’s Nuclear Systems Design and Analysis Division.
Before coming to the INL, he was IAEA Scientific Head in the Department of Nuclear Energy, responsible for the Agency’s innovative technology development activities in the area of fast neutron spectrum systems, in particular for the project on “Technology Advances in Fast Reactors and Accelerator Driven Systems”. For twelve years, he was the Scientific Secretary of the Agency’s Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors (TWG-FR).
Mr A. Stanculescu has 40 years of extensive experience with various aspects related to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, having been involved in both R&D and reactor design activities of various concepts (fast, thermal, sub-critical systems, reprocessing facilities), in various positions in industry [INTERATOM (later Siemens)], and research [Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)]. He was and is strongly involved in international efforts in the area of advanced reactor technology development (e.g. Generation IV Roadmap Technical Working Group on Liquid Metal Cooled Reactors, various OECD/NEA Expert Groups and Working Parties, ISTC Contact Expert Group on Accelerator Driven Systems, EC/Euratom collaborations).
