"Alternative Nuclear Waste Packages and Repository Operating
Concept for the Yucca Mountain Repository"

Alternative nuclear waste packaging techniques are proposed that would eliminate the excessive conservatism associated with the current (or the reference) waste package designs for the Yucca Mountain repository. The design alternatives include novel packaging techniques and component materials that demonstrate equivalent safety as the reference design at a significant reduction in the nuclear waste disposal cost. The various waste package designs, the associated materials and corrosion issues and thermal models confirming the feasibility of the proposed nuclear waste packaging concepts are presented.
