"The Technical Basis for the Long-Term Performance of the Proposed Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository"

Presented By

Peter Swift
Chief Scientist for the Yucca Mountain Lead Laboratory
& Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff

Sandia National Laboratories

The proposed repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is designed to accomplish the safe long-term isolation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste through a combination of natural and engineered barriers.  Characterization of these barriers and the ways in which they work together is essential to evaluating the safety of the site.  The DOE’s license application for Yucca Mountain, scheduled for submittal to the NRC in June 2008, will document the technical basis for the site, and will include consideration of the impacts of uncertainties in that basis on estimates of system performance over one million years.
