"The National Academies and a report on Tank Waste Retrieval, Processing, and On-Site Disposal at Three Department of Energy Sites"

Presented By

Micah D. Lowenthal
Senior Program Officer
Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board
The National Academies

At the request of Congress, a committee of the National Academies examined the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) plans for retrieving, processing, and disposing of radioactive waste generated by reprocessing of nuclear fuel and stored in underground tanks at the Savannah River Site, the Hanford Site, and the Idaho National Laboratory. The committee found that DOE’s overall approach for managing and disposing of the waste is workable, but important technical and programmatic challenges remain. This talk describes the National Academies, the study, and other recent and on-going studies that are of interest to the nuclear engineering community.
