"Replacing U.S. Nuclear Plants: Alternatives to Indian Point"

Presented By

ALEX FARRELL
Assistant Professor, Energy and Resources Group
UC Berkeley

A major challenge facing the United States in the coming decades is how to replace aging nuclear power plants, which is complicated by public concerns about nuclear safety and energy infrastructure, increasingly stringent environmental regulations that may limit fossil-fired generation, and growing energy demand. It will be hard for renewable energy sources to replace nuclear units because they are not nearly as compact, and, of course, some are intermittent. A current debate about the potential early retirement of Indian Point units 2 and 3, located just north of New York City provides an opportunity to study this challenge in detail and with specificity.
