Getting to the Conference

Below you will find directions on how to get yourself from either the San Francisco (SFO) or Oakland (OAK) Airport to Berkeley. If you would like to be picked up or escorted from the airport, please contact Mike King at hoodyhoo@uclink.berkeley.edu. Include the following: Arrival day and time, airport you are flying into, airline and flight number, and number of people in your party. We'll work with you to figure out the best travel solution.

Getting from the San Francisco Airport to Berkeley:

  • Option 1: Rental Car ($80-100 for four days) After getting your bags, follow the signs for rental cars. They will lead you to the AirTrain. AirTrain stations are located in all terminals, parking garages, and the Rental Car Center. Take the Blue Line to the Rental Car Center.

Make sure to get directions at the desk, but the basics are: Take 101-N towards San Francisco. Follow signs for 80-E and the Bay Bridge. As you come off the bridge, get in the left lanes. Follow signes for 80-E to Berkeley. Look for the University Avenue exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp and go a few miles. Refer to a good map or the hotel's directions from this point.

  • Option 2: Taxi (about $70 each way) After getting your bags, follow the signs for the taxis. This will take you outside and across one street to the center island. Proceed along the curb to the taxi stand. Tell the dispatcher that you want to go to Berkeley and give him the name of your hotel.

  • Option 3: The Bayporter Shuttle ($22 each way) Bayporter (1.415.467.1800) is a door-to-door shuttle that acts like a taxi but provides shared rides. Fare is $22 for the first passenger and $10 for each additional. From SFO, advance reservations are not required, but if you want to be on the safe side you can make advance reservations by phone or online. You can pay with credit card onboard the shuttle.

After getting your bags, follow the signs for "Door-to-Door Shuttles". They will direct you to the upper level (departures) and outside to the center traffic island. Look for the BayPorter Express sign in the door-to-door van boarding area. Check in with the SFO coordinator, usually wearing a green jacket, and tell him you want to go to Berkeley. The SFO coordinator will call a van for you, which normally arrives within 30 minutes. When you board, give the driver the name of the hotel.

Note: Within the past couple of years there have been reports of airport shuttle scams. ANS / Berkeley recommends the Bayporter. Check the names carefully; one of the scams involves copycat names. If you choose to use a different shuttle service, be sure to agree upon a price before accepting to use the service, and be aware that the driver may wait (sometimes up to an hour!) for the shuttle to fill up with passengers before leaving.

  • Option 4: Public Transportation ($4.45 each way) There are two steps to this: SamTrans and BART.

SamTrans is a bus that will take you to the nearest BART station. Follow the signs for Public Transportation. Buses depart from Baggage Claim level (arrivals), Terminal 2 Center Island and Terminal 3 Curbside, adjacent to Courtyard 4. You want Route BX. The fare is $1.25. The driver will deposit you at the Colma BART

BART is the Bay Area Rapid Transit, or our version of the Metro. You will enter the station and locate the ticket machines. Put $3.20 on the ticket and go through the gates to the track. Your destination is the Downtown Berkeley BART Station, which is on the Richmond Line. To get there will require at least one transfer depending on the time of day, so study the station map and listen to the announcements.
