Getting to the Conference

Below you will find directions on how to get yourself from either the San Francisco (SFO) or Oakland (OAK) Airport to Berkeley. If you would like to be picked up or escorted from the airport, please contact Mike King at hoodyhoo@uclink.berkeley.edu. Include the following: Arrival day and time, airport you are flying into, airline and flight number, and number of people in your party. We'll work with you to figure out the best travel solution.

Getting from the Oakland Airport to Berkeley:

  • Option 1: Rental Car ($80-100 for four days) After getting your bags, follow the signs for rental cars. They will lead you outside and across TWO streets (dont stop at the first curb!) to the bus stops for the rental car shuttles. Make sure to get directions at the desk, but the basics are: Take 880-N towards San Francisco until you see signs for 80. Take 80-E towards Sacramento (NOT San Francisco). Look for the University Avenue exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp and go a few miles. Refer to a good map or the hotel's directions from this point.

  • Option 2: Taxi (about $50 each way) After getting your bags, follow the signs for the taxis. This will take you outside. Do not cross any streets, but instead proceed along the curb to the taxi stand. Tell the dispatcher that you want to go to Berkeley and give him the name of your hotel.

  • Option 3: The Bayporter Shuttle ($19 each way) Bayporter (1.415.467.1800) is a door-to-door shuttle that acts like a taxi but provides shared rides. Fare is $19 for the first passenger and $10 for each additional. From Oakland, advance reservations ARE REQUIRED. You can make advance reservations by phone or online.

After getting your bags, call the BayPorter dispatcher at 1.877.467.1800 or from the Information desk at the front of the terminal. Give your confirmation number or name to the operator, who will then provide you with the exact time to proceed to the door-to-door van boarding area. A van is normally available within 30 minutes. To get to the boarding area, follow the signs for "Door-to-Door Shuttles".

From Terminal #1 (all major airlines): Located at the last shelter to the left on the third curbside walkway. Passengers must go to the traffic signal light across from United Airlines, cross 2 lanes to the third curb walkway, turn left, and walk to the last bus shelter that is marked "Door-to-Door."
From Terminal #2 (Southwest only): Located at the last shelter to the right on the third curbside walkway. Passengers should take the crosswalk at the signal light, cross 2 lanes to the third curb walkway, turn right, and walk to the last bus shelter that is marked "Door-to-Door."

Note: Within the past couple of years there have been reports of airport shuttle scams. ANS / Berkeley recommends the Bayporter. Check the names carefully; one of the scams involves copycat names. If you choose to use a different shuttle service, be sure to agree upon a price before accepting to use the service, and be aware that the driver may wait (sometimes up to an hour!) for the shuttle to fill up with passengers before leaving.

  • Option 4: Public Transportation ($3.75 each way) There are two steps to this: AirBART and BART.

AirBART is a shuttle that runs from the airport to the nearest BART station. It runs every 15 minutes from Monday-Saturday, 6:05 AM-11:50 PM; Sunday, 8:00 AM-11:45 PM. Last departure from BART is at 12:05 Midnight. To board AirBART, you will need to locate the ticket machine in the terminal and feed it $2. This will spit you out a ticket. Then follow the signs for AirBART, which will lead you across one street and along the curb to the bus stop. When you board the bus, give the driver your ticket. He will deposit you at the BART Coliseum / Airport Station.

BART is the Bay Area Rapid Transit, or our version of the Metro. You will enter the station and locate the ticket machines. Put $1.75 on the ticket and go through the gates to the track. Your destination is the Downtown Berkeley BART Station, which is on the Richmond Line. To get to the correct stop, you will need a Richmond train.
