Where to Stay in BerkeleyWe have currently arranged for rooms at three hotels. All blocks of rooms are held for conference attendees for the nights of 4/3 - 4/5, checking out on 4/6. (You are welcome to arrive earlier or stay later, but room availability is not guaranteed on these nights.)For all hotels, students book and pay for their own rooms. When you call, be sure to identify yourself as "American Nuclear Society" to get our special rates. Rooms can be reserved with a major credit card. You are responsible for telling the hotel how many will be in each room and what their names are at some point before or during check-in. RESERVE YOUR ROOM EARLY! The earlier you reserve your room, the better your chances of getting the hotel and room you want. Also, if you don't book by the dates listed below, you may pay a higher rate for staying in the same hotel. Rooms can be cancelled up to 24 hours before the conference, so it doesn't hurt to reserve them early. As spaces fill up, we will arrange for more rooms, though these may be at different hotels. See the map below for an idea of where these hotels are located relative to the BART station (your probable arrival point in Berkeley) and MLK Student Union (the conference location). Please note that walking from west to east means walking uphill, and that we will be providing shuttles for the Hotel Shattuck only if funds allow. 1) Hotel Shattuck Plaza (Howard Johnson) (aka. the "cheap" hotel). 2086 Allston Way Berkeley, CA 94704 (510) 845-7300 for the hotel, (800) 237-5359 for toll-free reservations. The initial deadline has passed, but the hotel has agreed to save some more rooms with one queen bed. Rooms will be held until February 24, 2003. Room rate is $79 double occupancy, $10 each additional person. The hotel owns 8 rollaway beds, which you should request when reserving your room. Other notes: Continental breakfast included. The rooms are nice, fairly large for Berkeley. Lobby and rooms are being renovated and will be done just in time for the conference. They have 3 computers in the lobby with high-speed internet for the free use of guests. Lots of seating in lobby for sit-down breakfast. This is Darby's recommendation for students paying their own way. 2) Bancroft Hotel (aka. the "ritzy" hotel) 2680 Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA 94704 (510) 549-1000, (800) 549-1002. We have reserved the entire hotel - 22 rooms each with one queen bed. Rooms will be held until March 3, 2003. Room rate is $109 for 2 people. Other notes: This is a very nice hotel. Darby's recommendation for professionals and those who wish to get a good night's sleep. 3) Hotel Durant (aka. the "close" hotel) 2600 Durant Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 (510) 845-8981, (800) 238-7268. We have reserved 15 rooms with two double beds (they have 23) and 5 rooms with one king bed. Students can probably also request a room with one queen if desired, for a $10 price break. The hotel is checking on rollaway inventory. Rooms will be held until March 3, 2003. Room rate is $118 for 3 people in a king, $138 for four people in a 2-double. ($108 for 2 people in a queen.) Other notes: The rooms at this hotel are smallish, but nice quality. This is Darby's recommendation for people who are getting reimbursed for rooms.
