Title:  Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options Study

Date: Dec 6, 2010
Location: 3105 Etcheverry Hall
Time: 4-5pm

Abstract

The Options Study examined the ability of alternative nuclear fuel cycles to address the current issues with nuclear power. The Study was a comprehensive consideration of all fuel cycle options, including disposal options, with no constraints on the choice of fuel cycle or presumption of technical maturity. The purpose of the study was to develop information for policy and decision-makers about the performance capabilities of the fuel cycle options, connecting the issues with potential solutions to the issues.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Roald Wigeland has been active in research related to nuclear power for over 30 years, first at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, and now at the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho. At present, he continues to lead research efforts in many areas of the nuclear fuel cycle, currently focusing on nuclear systems analysis, sodium-cooled fast reactor safety, and nuclear nonproliferation. Experience also includes research and development in spent fuel processing and separations, both for aqueous and non-aqueous systems, and studies of the effects of recycle on spent fuel management and disposal.
