Abstract

The world’s population is expected to expand from 6.7 billion people today to over 9 billion people by the year 2050, all striving for a better quality of life. As the Earth’s population grows, so does the demand for energy and the benefits that it brings. For the Earth to support its population all while ensuring sustainability of humanity’s development, we must increase the use of energy supplies that are clean, safe, cost-effective, and which could serve for both electricity production as well as non-electrical applications. Prominent among these supplies is nuclear energy. Within the Generation IV International Forum, concepts fulfilling these criteria are being developed, among which fast reactor concepts, which, when operated in conjunction with fuel recycling, appear as a very appealing and promising option from the standpoint of uranium resource utilization, waste minimization and management, and proliferation resistance.
