Title: Safety Analysis at Non-reactor Nuclear Facilities

Abstract
Provide an overview of the Safety Analyst profession at Los Alamos National Laboratory and other Department of Energy sites. Highlight the various analytical modeling codes used for accident analysis at non-reactor nuclear and high hazard facilities. Summarize applicable regulations. Describe student research/employment opportunities.
Speaker Biography
Julie A. JohnstonPh.D. Mathematics Education, University of New Mexico
Dr. Johnston is Project Leader for the Safety Basis Academy, supporting development of technical courses for Safety Analysts throughout the Department of Energy facilities. She has more than 30 years of experience as a project manager, supervisor, and technical trainer/educator, including extensive experience at three of the nuclear facilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory. At the Laboratory, she has led the Radiological Worker Protection Training Team and the Environmental Surveillance and Monitoring Reports Team.
Ronald Selvage
M.S. Nuclear Engineering, Texas A&M University
Mr. Selvage is the Group Leader for Safety Basis Technical Services at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His Group performs detailed calculations for Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) development, develops Safety Basis Policies for the Los Alamos site, and develops safety basis documents for non-nuclear facilities. The Group also develops and presents courses for the Safety Basis Academy. Mr. Selvage has been performing safety analysis for over 16 years, and has produced or led safety analysis efforts for plutonium facilities, accelerator facilities, nuclear waste facilities, and explosive facilities.
